The Solicitors Regulation Authority regulate 184,000 solicitors in England and Wales and more than 10,000 legal businesses. We are here to make sure the public can have trust and confidence that solicitors meet high professional standards, while also making it easier for them to find affordable legal services that suit their needs.
We see the development of a diverse profession as a real priority. Legal services are critically important to everyone in society and law firms need to appeal to the brightest and best in every community. And every community should be able to see itself reflected in the solicitors, the advocates and the judiciary, and the many other lawyers, that make up our legal sector.
A diverse profession is a better profession and we are working to support the profession as it changes and grows.
Our data shows that Asian partners, for example, make up four percent of partners in larger firms compared with 16 percent of partners in the smaller firms with 2 to 5 partners. Sharing information is powerful – we can all see how much needs to be done.
We are trying to make a difference by changing how people can come into the profession so it’s more open to aspiring solicitors from every walk of life. And we are freeing up solicitors to work how and where they want, encouraging a modern, flexible profession and breaking down barriers.
To effect real change, we know that all those who are committed to addressing the challenges work together. Members of SAL have a key part in that, as role models, as influencers and as catalysts for change. Supporting the good work that SAL does can only help the profession today and the profession of the future.
SAL are key partners. Your voice and input into the work we do is important to us. For example, our package of regulatory reforms, designed to provide solicitors and law firms with greater flexibility over how they operate, has been created following feedback from organisations such as yourselves. And of course, we have a shared commitment to making sure Asian solicitors have every opportunity to thrive and make a real contribution to the sector.
JLT is one of the world’s leading providers of insurance, reinsurance and employee benefits related advice, brokerage and associated services.
The CPS has a good news story in developing a diverse workforce, with almost one in five of our staff being of a black, Asian or minority ethnic background. That’s twice the level across the Civil Service as a whole. We want to continue to encourage these high levels of diversity through sponsoring this award and in particular in providing career paths to the top of the organisation.
In addition, as Britain’s “largest law firm”, we also want to recognise excellence in the field of criminal law.
As one of SAL’s aims is to promote and develop the legal profession within the Asian community, this dovetails with the CPS’ priority of ensuring that we retain and recruit a high proportion of black, Asian or minority ethnic staff and with our inclusion strategy.
The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) is the principal authority that prosecutes crimes across England and Wales, making decisions independently of the police and government. Our duty is to ensure the right person is prosecuted for the right offence and to bring offenders to justice, wherever possible.
Prosecutors must be fair, objective and independent. When deciding whether to prosecute a criminal case, our lawyers must follow the statutory Code for Crown Prosecutors. To charge someone with a criminal offence, prosecutors must be satisfied that there is sufficient evidence to provide a realistic prospect of conviction, and that prosecuting is in the public interest.
The Criminal Lawyer Award nominee is recognition of your achievements especially at this challenging time in criminal justice and shows the difference you are making every day in the cases you handle as a criminal lawyer and your commitment to this area of law.
