“I want to thank the team for changing my life.”
“Being supported by Barnardo’s has been really important to me. I believed that I would never get anywhere in life, but since coming here to Barnardo’s it has completely changed how I think about everything. Without Barnardo’s, I don’t know where I’d be.
What being part of Barnardo’s has done for me is help me to feel heard and valued. The past does not mean you are written off, and the end of intervention work does not mean the end of support. I want to thank the team for changing my life.”
Sonny, former Barnardo’s service user.
Barnardo’s is the UK’s largest and oldest national children’s charity, established over 150 years ago.
In 1866 our founder, Dr. Thomas Barnardo, made a promise to be there to support vulnerable young people most in need – regardless of their circumstances, gender, race, disability or behaviour. Today, we continue to honour that promise. We offer unconditional love, hope and family to those who have none, working tirelessly to support and protect young people facing a wide range of challenges, including drug misuse, sexual abuse, disability, or domestic violence.
As the leading expert in children and young people, we don’t just respond to the challenges of today. We seek to prevent problems from occurring tomorrow. Focusing on prevention, we work in partnership with National and Local Government, police, health bodies and local communities to support families, keep children safe from harm, and give young people the tools and resilience they need to achieve a positive future.
For the first time, our services reached more than 300,000 children, young people, parents and carers in the UK. One in four of these service users are from Black and Minority Ethnic backgrounds, with this number rising to around 60% of service users in London. We work with each child to provide tailored solutions to meet their individual needs, ensuring everything we do is relevant to them. And we want to work with our supporters and audiences in the same way, offering all the opportunity to make a difference by supporting vulnerable children.
To create better outcomes for more children and families, our strategic aims focus on building Stronger Families, Safer Childhoods and Positive Futures. Whilst running over 1000 children’s services nationwide, our core priority focus areas include:
- Mental Health and Wellbeing – 1 in 10 children in the UK have a diagnosable mental health condition.
- Child Sexual Abuse – 1 in 20 children in the UK have experiences child sexual abuse before the age of 18.
- Children in and Leaving Care – 62% of looked after children have suffered abuse or neglect.
With your support, we can make a long-term, sustained impact on the lives of thousands of vulnerable and disadvantaged children and young people.
